Univack begins the new year by welcoming Fernando Olaya to the label for his debut EP. As one of Colombia’s most recognized progressive house artists, the Zipaquira resident has showcased his music on Asymmetric, BeatFreak, Movement, Traum and his own Sonnet Speciale imprint. Now making his much anticipated Univack debut, Fernando presents his ‘Iguazu’ EP to kick start the new year.
Beginning with the title track ‘Iguazu’ Fernando continues to explore the progressive minded ethos which has made him such an in demand artist. Energetic and fluid, warm beats and rippling bass unite for a robust low end. Dramatic pulses and piercing stabs add mightily to the rhythmic core, as layers of percussion build momentum with each successive loop. Enticing yet mysterious, gentle harmonics and ghostly atmospheres take the narrative into an otherworldly break, melting down to an arcane rumble, before a tasteful build cues a glowing finale.
‘Tulum’ follows suit with more of a peak time techno sensibility. Charged rhythms and organic drums carry the rolling groove while quirky hooks and granular sweeps trail across the stereo field. Once again drama and tension are at a premium here, as a timely break and tasteful harmonic motif reset the groove for an exhilarating third act.
The third and final selection ‘Tecnicolor’ finds Fernando continuing the peak time ethos of the collection. It’s meaty kick and rolling underbelly provide a perfect balance of warmth and drive. Clattering percussion and phasing noise build momentum while buzzing electronics and tonal accents layer the commanding groove. The narrative shifts with a second act of epic overlays and indistinct vocals, transferring energy into the main break, before a rush of noise and drums sparks a colossal final act. It caps off an excellent Univack debut for Fernando, a artist who continues to operate at his creative peak. Highly recommended.

What was your beginning in electronic music like?Â
I started from a very young age studying piano, and listening to my father’s vinyl music, then I heard on the radio different artists who fell in love with me like: Technotronic, Ace of Base, Everything but the Girl, Afrika Bambata, Robin S and his “Show me Loveâ€, Jean Michelle Jarre … At that time I knew that I wanted to dedicate myself to producing this music when I grow up
What do you think are the biggest changes you’ve experienced in your own music and within the industry since you began?
I started producing in early 2000 I was very influenced by trance and I was also studying music at the conservatory but then I met techno music and let myself be infected by its underground sound, I changed my style and began to press my first productions as “FERTY “From 2006 to 2012. At this time I had already signed with great labels and my tracks were played by Fat Boy Slim, Stefano Noferini, Robbie Rivera, Joy Kitikonti … Then I retired from music and decided to make the biggest change in my career.
I decided to kill my first aka Ferty and I started with something more honest with myself, something more musical and applying all the experience in my career, at that moment Fernando Olaya was born the great change.
Since I started as Fernando Olaya until today I have had great evolution in my sound, going through deep, progressive to melodic techno, but always with much percussion and groove for the dance floor. For me it would be something more melodic tech-house
Can you share with us more about your live act and how your electronic music performances compare to your experience playing in traditional rock bands?Â
My act is live is very simple, Ableton Live and max for live with different channels to be able to sample live with a “Push†and control everything from an Akai APC 40 and the touchable app with the iPad, I also carry midi keyboards and improvise different harmonies and arpeggios with plug-ins such as Omnisphere, Trillian, Maschine 2 or Komplete, I include an RMX 1000 as a general processor and sometimes I carry guitar pedals, I also usually invite different musicians. In a live act that I did in Havana (Cuba) I invited saxophonist, violinist, and guitarist for a show people loved it.
I’ve always been a rocker who loves English sound since MUSE, Pink Floyd, Radiohead, Rolling Ston, Placebo, Unkle, but I also love the heavy sound.
I have worked mixing different rock groups and it has helped me to have another vision of the composition in electronic music. The positive thing about a live act is that you control the ideas in a band sometimes the musicians fight to make their instruments the protagonists. The rock style and distortions I apply in the synthesizers as well as in the harmonies that I use in my productions.
What has been one of your favorite performances you’ve done?Â
I can say that there are several important presentations such as the burning man Colombia, playing in Ibiza or the first time I played at the Amsterdam Dance Event. But I have two special shows that are favorites: the first time my mother and sister went to listen to me in a show and the other time to play with a producer who was my idol when I started, Sebastien Leger.
Where are you putting most of your focus on within the music lately? Are there any upcoming projects you can share with us?
At the moment I am preparing an album for 2020, this year there are great releases on Mango Alley, Univack Records and some releases the other year for great labels but I still can’t say it. I also have presentations in Argentina and Brazil this month.

What do you think are your greatest strengths as a musician?Â
Apart from studying piano, which helps me to improvise live in live acts, I believe that my greatest virtue is to make harmonic and melodic arrangements in my compositions using advanced progressions or non-traditional scales, such as the Hungarian, Hiratoshi, Neapolitan or using the modal scales. I am very good in counterpoint so I always try to do very musical things.
What are you most proud of accomplishing within your music career?
Apart from important awards in my country as best DJ, or nominations in the “vicious magazine award†as best producer, I think the most important thing is the relationship I have with the public and the friendships I make in each country where I present myself with my music. I am a music and production teacher and a great satisfaction is to transmit to my students the experiences and knowledge that I have acquired in all these years so that they also fulfill their dreams. That is very satisfying.
What do you feel is the most important thing for people to experience when they listen to your music or go to one of your shows?Â
People who are going to listen my music probably may have never heard a single track that I play and may never hear it again as I make versions to play on the dance floor and possibly never publish them. I always play very musical, melodic but also very danceable songs so that people dance and travel with the sounds at the same time, they can listen to rock styles, going through classical music or tracks with oriental sounds. It all depends on the moment.
My main function on the dance floor is for people to connect with me and my music and forget their daily problems for a few hours. That they take away the stress of the week in the office or their personal problems, the important thing is that they change the energy of the dance floor.
I’d love to hear more about Sonnet Speciale – can you share more about the meaning behind the name and what listeners can expect to hear on your show?Â
Sonnet Speciale is a record label that I created since 2012 when Fernando Olaya was born and was created to share music with dark, melodic, progressive and alternative sounds. For me Sonnet Speciale represents a surreal sound, each song is a story with different sweet colors, dark atmospheric, melancholic but always danceable.
Every week I receive music for the label or tracks sent to me by producers so that I play in my shows, I am very happy that I can share all these beautiful sounds with all the listeners of Frisky Radio.

Fernando Olaya no es un tipo de fiesta, es más tranquilo y aplomado. Pero cuando se trata de encender la rumba, su música, que lo ha llevado a grandes escenarios del género electrónico internacional, es una completa catarsis llena de sonidos progresivos que elevan el ánimo o lo apaciguan. Lo presentamos hace un par de meses en Distractor y tuvimos la oportunidad de entrevistarlo para aproximarnos a su trabajo de una manera más personal, conocer sus percepciones sobre el género en la actualidad y su futuro como creador en la industria. Apartes del podcast que podrán escuchar completo al final del mismo. El próximo 1 de junio estará en la ciudad de Pereira haciendo un Live Act en el Tunnel Pereira.
Juancho Parada: ¿Cómo inicia esa pasión por el género electrónico?
Fernando Olaya: Soy un melómano, amante de la música, desde muy pequeño estudié música. Todo esto comenzó por mi padre que coleccionaba vinilos. En esa época mi hermana organizaba fiestas de colegio con las minitecas, yo tendría más o menos 8 o 9 años, y empecé a escuchar la música dance de los 90. Habían sacado algo llamado Lo Más Disco en una serie de volúmenes y empezaron a llegar muchas bandas nuevas europeas. Era raro, pues a esa edad y esa música era totalmente extraña para mí. Me llamó la atención y me pegué a mi hermana para ver cómo grababa los casetes y llevarlos a las fiestas.
J.P: Y los primeros pasos en la experimentación con esos sonidos, ¿cómo se dieron? ¿Cuáles fueron sus primeros referentes?
F.O: Hacia los 13 años me dio hepatitis y tuve que ausentarme como unos tres meses del colegio. En ese entonces mi papá tenía un tecladito pequeño, como una especie de sintetizador, que le habían regalado y nunca lo habían usado. Empecé a experimentar con los sonidos electrónicos y ahí me atrajo más. Después de eso llega a Colombia una colección llamada Positiva 2000 y entra el tema del after party, que era una selección de música electrónica nueva, traída de Estados Unidos y de Europa, y empiezo a coleccionar ese estilo de música. Ahí me empiezo a involucrar mucho más con eso. A los 15 años conozco un sello disquero llamado Perfecto Récords de un artista inglés llamado Paul Oakenfold y escucho las colecciones que saca con Sasha y John Digweed y nada, me dije “yo quiero empezar a tocar como este señor”. También me involucro con el rock progresivo: conozco lo que es Kraftwerk, Pink Floyd, todo esto fue para mí nuevo y me llevó por los sonidos de la música progresiva electrónica.
J.P: Cuando empieza a tocar en fiestas en la capital ¿cómo fue conciliar ese mundo con los mitos que existían alrededor de la movida nocturna, agitada y clandestina asociada comúnmente a la fiesta electrónica?
F.O: Al encontrarme con este estilo de vida nocturno y pesado no me gustó. Vengo de una familia muy tradicional, eso lo hacía más por el amor a la música, por el arte, no porque fuera un tema de moda, por las fiestas o por las drogas. Ahí empecé a crear un estilo algo más tecno, que llamé Ferti, pero me salí de eso por un par de años precisamente por ese ambiente.
J.P: Después de haber terminado su formación como músico e ingeniero de sonido, ¿cómo fue su incursión en el escenario internacional?
F.O Salgo de ese cambio de Ferti, que era una producción más de house, me alejo y decido volver a incursionar con la música electrónica pero más con lo que yo era, con los sonidos progresivos. Decido crear mi nombre artístico, Fernando Olaya, y empiezo a enviar mi música a sellos alemanes, ingleses y holandeses, la música empieza a entrar en diferentes tops como Beatport, varios artistas empiezan a tocar mis canciones y empiezan a invitarme para tocar en diferentes fiestas en Bogotá con Paul Van Dyke, con Sasha acá en Piso 30. Luego me invitan a un festival en Holanda, el Amsterdam Dance Event, allí comienzo a conectarme con otros productores y entendí el mundo de la música electrónica real, que hay charlas, talleres, que hay una industria alrededor y empecé a fascinarme más por esa música.
J.P: ¿Qué caracteriza su show actualmente?
F.O: Empecé a incursionar con el Live Act o creación de música en vivo, no mezclar dos canciones, sino empezar a crear con secuenciadores, sintetizadores, con software. Es más llamativo para la gente, pero es un reto para uno, pues pasa de ser un DJ a ser un artista electrónico en vivo. De hecho, tenemos un proyecto nuevo para este año llamado Melódica que es con música clásica y música electrónica, pero de cámara.

Dicen que cuando obras bien, las cosas a tu alrededor salen bien. Tras un año 2017 de muchos proyectos, apoyos y alianzas con promotores, amigos y diferentes personas que han querido construir escena junto a nosotros, podemos decir que las noticias buenas no paran. Con una invitación arrancando el año para cubrir The BPM Festival en Playa del Carmen, México el mundo estaba listo para conocer nuestro trabajo, que con mucha honra y dedicación hemos sacado adelante “con las uñas” este proyecto que cada día crece y no para de hacerlo. A mediados de Mayo, el viejo continente nos abría la puerta por primera vez y gracias nuestros colaboradores en Barcelona festivales como Sónar, Tomorrowland, DGTL, OFF Sónar o promotoras como Indigo Raw, nos demostraron que las oportunidades son para aprovecharlas.
Es así, como en aproximadamente una semana el equipo de RAVERSMAG.COM se trasladará en esta ocasión a descubrir un nueva experiencia con el cubrimiento del ADE o mejor conocido como el Amsterdam Dance Event. Una conferencia/festival de música electrónica de cinco días que se celebra anualmente a mediados de octubre en la ciudad holandesa.
El evento es organizado por The Amsterdam Dance Event Foundation y ofrece un programa completo de conferencias diurnas en ADE Pro, ADE Tech, ADE University, ADE Next, ADE Beamlab y ADE Green, junto con el ADE Festival nocturno que cuenta con más de 450 eventos y 2.200 artistas en más de 115 clubes y sedes. Los espectáculos atraen a más de 350.000 personas de todo el mundo a la ciudad, convirtiendo a Amsterdam en una de las ciudades de clubes más concurridas del mundo para dicha época.
En este trayecto al ADE -que aún ni siquiera empieza- casualmente nos topamos con Fernando Olaya. Un músico conservador especializado en armonía y arreglista de cuerdas de Zipaquirá, quién además cuenta con más de 10 años de experiencia como DJ y productor. Habiendo trabajado con importantes sellos discográficos como Parquet Recordings, Natura Viva, Manual Music, Barroco, Liquid Groove, Sonnet Speciale, Stellar Fountain; además de haber estado más de cinco veces en el top 100 de beatport y dos veces en el top 10 de Techno y Progressive y también representará a Colombia en el ADE 2017.
Hablamos con el zipaquireño quien este año repetirá la hazaña de presentarse por está, su segunda ocasión consecutiva en el Festival.
Soy un músico, compositor y productor Zipaquireño de música electrónica, llevo aproximadamente 10 años como docente en diferentes áreas, melómano, amante del rock y la música clásica. Trabajo con diferentes sellos disqueros de todo el mundo como Parquet, Replug, Manual Music, Natura Viva.
Mis producciones las tocan artistas como Markus Schulz, Khen, Hernán Cattaneo, Jhon Digweed, Ryan Davis, Joris Voorn por nombrar algunos y he tenido también la fortuna de presentarme en diferentes países como Holanda, Estados Unidos, México, España, Bélgica, Alemania y en Colombia con artistas como Sasha, Paul Ritch, Dubfire, Carlo Lio, Cid Inc..
No suelo encasillarme, pero diría que es Melodic Techno con colores oscuros, armonías exóticas, ritmos grooveros a veces fusiones con música clásica o rock.
Inicie con el a.k.a. Ferty en el 2005 produciendo desde techno pasando por el , tech house y el trance, era muy versátil así que mis tracks entraron varias veces a los tops de beatport y desde allí tuve la fortuna de que las pistas las tocaran desde FatboySlim hasta Jhon Digweed, desde un Robbie Rivera hasta un estilo muy diferente como lo es Hernán Cattaneo.
Todas mis presentaciones en Europa o Latinoamérica han sido gracias a mis producciones, muchos sellos Europeos me escriben para trabajar con ellos y el año pasado tuve la fortuna de ser invitado a este gran festival y de paso hacer un tour por Europa, incluso me presente en los estudios de Ibiza Global Radio, en la hermosa isla de Ibiza.
Me presento el sábado 21 de Octubre en Recycle Lounge Gallery Club, representando a tres sellos con los que trabajo: Just Movemet (Holanda), Movement Recordings (Grecia) y Balkan Connection (Serbia) y el Domingo 22 en el showcase de Zhephyr Music(India) en el Ámsterdam Café Techno Bar Lunar. Mi perspectiva ha cambiado acerca de la industria y cada vez tengo mas admiración por los productores underground como: Dousk, Interaxxis o Tuxedo que son artistas con los que compartiré.
Espero ir a ver a mis amigos productores de los sellos con quienes trabajo y tengo buena conexión como Alex Panagoulopoulos, Amber Long, Li-Polymer, Tash, Luke Santos pero sin duda alguna asistiré al showcase de Sudbeat (Hernán Cattaneo, Nick Warren), showcase de Lost & Found (Guy J Guy Matzur, Khen) y fiestas de artistas como Sebastien Leger, Henry Saiz, N’to, Patrice Baumel, Gui Boratto.
La verdad aun falta demasiado apoyo por parte de los festivales y empresarios Colombianos, es cierto que muchos no conocen mi música y otros indudablemente se mueven en roscas pero definitivamente no me interesa regalar mi trabajo y trayectoria por simplemente aparecer en un flyer así que prefiero permanecer en el estudio.
Es un EP hermoso de 2 tracks “The Departure” el primer track con fuerza y naturaleza techno, complementado con atmosferas y una melodía que genera hipnotismo , el segundo track “A Tribute” basado en un tributo a un maestro olvidado Holandés Jeroen Tel quien fue el creador de pistas para videojuegos en los 90’s, inicialmente iba a ser un remix para Jeroen pero después se pidieron los permisos para lanzarse como original.
